I met you in a side street meshed in silence, halfway between my home and yours. Just as I set out to find you in the heart of the doomed city, you did the same, heading for my place. It is amazing how we always are on the same wavelength, guessing each other's thoughts and actions. Or maybe it is nothing out of the ordinary. The house that was abandon had an old moldering wooden fence around it with a river of chipped white paint running beneath. The gate hung on a solitary rusting hinge that creaked and twisted when pushed. The person or people who once lived here used to grow tomatoes, and proof stands in the far corner of the yard. They are round and fist-sized, succulent red, meandering on the edge of flourish as they creep subtly through the grass. I pick one, slice it with a pocket knife. It's sweet. We sit and talk about stars and dust. I laugh and you laugh about Weakness. Relevance. We are immune here.

Joyfully, she looked up. The top of the mountain was shrouded in clouds today, permafrost invisible. She breathed in the pure air, her backpack feeling light on her back even though it was heavy. She was almost at the top. After months of preparation, and many weeks of climbing, this would be the day. She didn't know if she would reach the top.
